On September 7, 2016, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Ana embarked on a new Signature Event. The club, in conjunction with First Serve Santa Ana (FSSA), Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA), sponsored the inaugural Wheelchair Tennis Event. The event was well attended with more than 200 special needs students being bused to the McFadden Intermediate tennis facility from five different elementary and intermediate schools. The USTA brought in wheelchair tennis players from all over Southern California to put on a demonstration of how wheelchair tennis is played. The Kiwanis Club and FSSA organized the logistics of the program by coordinating the different entities of such a great undertaking. The SAUSD funded and scheduled lunches and transportation for the students to and from their schools. There were many volunteers needed for this event: College Circle K members to SAUSD District Staff, and even the DJ was a retired Orange County Sheriff. All in all, the event was a huge success and all of us are looking forward to our next Wheelchair Tennis Event, which will occur on September 8, 2017 from 9 a.m. to Noon.
